Lily was a remarkable kid. She put her handful of cards on the table with a whoop, “my ace trumps your queen.”

Luke held in his hands up in defeat. “Two games in a row, that’s a hammering.”

“Are there any more of those crisp things?” Lily asked.

“Go see. Remember—”

“The blinds stay down, I know, Mum, I didn’t forget in the last ten minutes.” Lily disappeared into the kitchen.

“She seems fine,” Luke picked up the cards and began shuffling.

“A lie in until she wanted to get out of bed, no school, as much junk food as she wants and time on those games upstairs unrestricted, what twelve-year-old wouldn’t be? But that’s just today, day one, tomorrow might be different for all of us.” Eva sighed. “I wish I knew what was happening at Sentinel.”

“You and me both. But I don’t see any way of doing anything to help without jeopardising what the guys are trying to achieve here.”

Spence looked up from his book. “That’s because there isn’t but I appreciate you haven’t tried to break the rules. Most people do.”

“Don’t count your chickens,” Luke warned, “it’s early days.”

Lily came back into the lounge. “Did you guys order takeaway? What’s coming, is it Chinese? That’s my favourite, pizza would be okay too, though—”

“What do you mean?” Spence’s tone was careful.

“There’s a guy on a bike coming up the drive. I saw him on the camera thing in the cupboard. We don’t have any more crisps.”

He dropped his book and was in the kitchen before Eva heard it. A bike, a powerful bike sending a shudder through her.

And then they understood he’d brought powerful weapons.

Bullets smacked through the picture window at the front of the house.

Lily screamed.

“Lily, down!” Eva hurtled towards her daughter, tackling her to the floor. “We’re crawling upstairs to the bathroom, go.”

“Compromised, compromised, compromised.” Spence yelled into his comms, taking up position behind the overturned armchair in front of the picture window, aiming at the living room door.

Rob ran to the kitchen to cover the back door.

“Give us something to shoot with,” Luke yelled. “I can have your back.”

Eva scrabbled low up the stairs behind Lily, one hand on her back pushing, directing, steadying. “Into the bath.”

“I want to stay with you.”

“The bath is the safest place,” Eva told her. “I can’t protect you out here.”

“But—”

“Lily, bear, you can shout at me all you want later. Now I need you to do as you’re told.”

Lily jumped at a fresh assault on the house’s windows.

“Whoever it is can’t get through the security. In you get.” Eva helped her in. “Love you, I’ll be back before you know it.”

Eva dropped a kiss on Lily’s head, prised her hands off her. “Stay down until I say otherwise.”

She ran downstairs and peered around the kitchen door. “Rob, you need backup?”

He flicked her a glance. “Okay,” threw her his spare weapon.

Holding it in her right hand was like a spell, a clarity dropped over her, the ability to filter out her pounding pulse in her head, her heart screaming for her to hold Lily close.
